Returning to Almost-Normal Life…

I went back to work today for the first time since the collision. They left my desk exactly as I left it: all my toys were still there. Hee.

I was actually happy and excited to wake up at 6:30 again. The only time I got kind of anxious is when I was on my way to work, about 5 minutes away. I got a knot in my chest and I could feel my car getting smaller and smaller. I got over it, and work was good. I left at lunch to run some errands.

I drove by the scene of the accident. I didn’t really feel anything… just kinda empty. Then, I drove around the neighborhood trying to find the black BMW. I lost track of time and had to race back to southwest Houston to get my parking permit application notarized at my old elementary school. Everyone was glad to see that I’m already up and running around.

I went to the DMV to get the permit. I had to park far away and the line extended into the un-air conditioned antechamber of the building. I asked a cop after about 15 minutes of sweltering 105 degree heat and having to stand on my foot if I was in the right line. NOPE. “Quick! get to the courthouse before 4:30!” Crap.

Courthouse was interesting. I sat next to an old Asian Man. He introduced himself as Grandmaster Li. He teaches Judo and competed in the 1964 Olympics! He then proceeded to point out every single fat person in the room and talk about how lazy Americans are. It was a little strange. He was 72 but didn’t look a day over 30. He had me touch his arm. It was solid as a friggin’ rock!!

Went back to my parents’ house after that. I just happened to be home when a woman from the hospital called. “Yeah… we have to put a $178,000 lien on your name.” I told her about the social worker who gave me the lawyer’s information. It’s against company policy (or the law, I forget) to give legal advice to patients. The woman on the phone looked in my file, found the name of the social worker who sold me to these shysters, and was going to contact her supervisor. Yes! Finally, SOME justice! I had a whole messload of questions, none of which I currently remember but the nice woman on the phone said I could call her tomorrow after I get off work and she’ll answer them for me.

I went to Whole Foods, as I had a gift certificate from my Kindergarten teacher. I was telling the checkout guy my story. About 3/4 the way through, he interjects “Oh, my god, I’m giving you some free stuff,” and he started ticking off some items. He got rid of enough of them that I could get the $31 collagen rebuilding stuff I wanted and I paid $37 total. $25 of it was a gift card. Booya! I also got some AMAZING analgesic cream for my calves and soles of my feet (unbroken skin!) and possibly my wrists. It feels great. I don’t care if it costs $13 for a bottle, it’s basically Bengay that doesn’t smell like old people– it has orange oil in it! I’m getting more when I run out.

I did the math and I made $41 at work today. Only $177,959 to go!

  1. Katie, ouch! I just found this via a macrumors -> Twitter -> here while bored at work browsing. I just scooted into work on my new Vespa and now I think I’ll scoot home while keeping an extra cautious eye out for rogue BMWs! Maybe you could get the BMW lady to run over the dodgy lawyers?

Your predicament is pretty horrible but you seem to be coping with it well considering. Writing is a great way of letting it all out! I hope you can get back on your bike and maybe play your viola too sometime (although maybe not at the same time).

You should also try some blatent pledgie self-promotion over at MR. There’s a lot of KT fans there I reckon!

    Stay strong!
