On April 23, I was minding my own business, scooting to work. A woman runs a stop sign. I hit her dead-on, 35 mph, less than half a car length to react. I was 2 miles from work.
I flew 20 feet from my poor, now-totaled scooter. My shoes were about a foot from it. My helmet landed 10 feet from it. The engine was still running. Clumps of red hair littered the street.
I don’t remember being in the air. Just hitting the car, then hitting the ground. I was on all fours and couldn’t feel anything. All I saw was blood dripping down my scalp, down my face, down my arms onto the concrete.
A man called 911. Another good samaritan helped me sit up. After I sat up, I saw my foot.
It looked as if I’d been run over by a lawn mower. Google “degloving” and you’ll get an idea of what happened. I saw tendons and bones and the inside of my foot. That’s when the pain hit me and I really started freaking out.
The driver of the car jumped out and hugged me, “Please stop bleeding!!”
The man who called 911 also called my mom. He asked if I wanted to speak to her. I couldn’t do anything but scream. I was loaded up into the ambulance and taken to the ER.
The ride there was interesting. I had the paramedic help me call Nick, my boyfriend. He was doing inventory that day. I remember it was a really strange, monotonous phone call. “Hey Nick, I was just in a really bad accident. Um… I’ll see you later?” I also called work from the ambulance. My mom already had.
I get to the ER and they take the bandage off my foot. It’s still bleeding profusely. They cut off all my clothing and start with the x-rays. I swear to god, slowest x-ray techs EVER. Someone puts four staples in my scalp and I’m sent off to surgery, my first of five over the course of the next two weeks.

I guess you’ll be missing the next TX Store opening? I’d seen your Twitter updates and had generally gathered you’d been in some kind of accident, but reading the details makes it a little more real. Scooters are scary (rather car drivers + two wheeled vehicles). Hope your recovery is as quick as it can be. Best wishes.

I loved that scooter and plan on getting another one. When’s the next Texas Apple opening? I’ll be there if it’s local to me.
